BARREN ISLANDS

EXPLORE MORE ABOUT BARREN ISLANDS

The Barren Island, which is also known as the "Andaman Islands" is located in a sea that is dominated by the Barren Volcano (Andaman sea.) This volcano is said to be the only verified volcano which is very active along a volcano chain spanning from Sumatra till Myanmar situated in South Asia. Barren Island can be accessed either with scuba-operators or a live-aboard ship that has a base at Havelock Island. Though it is a volcano, it is not so dangerous to go around this area. The latest eruption was recorded as two on a one to eight indexes, thereby being so much in safe limits.

Speciality, Natural Attractions and Species of Barren island

The Barren Island can be located at an approximate distance of 86 miles or 138 km northeast of the capital of the territory which is known as Port Blair. This Island is thus a section of the Indian Union Territory, given that it lies between the Burmese plate and the zone of India. The summit of a volcano rising about 2.3 km from seafloor level considering 354 m above water line makes up the Barren Island. It is an emerging volcano summit rising from its depth. It is equally three (3) km wide. Eruptions which usually occur in this area have naturally diminished the population of birds and their various species. A drop from sixteen species of birds to six is being observed as of now, and of which the most abundant is the Pied Imperial Pigeon. Just as its name goes, the landscape in this area is barren, even though there is a little population of bats, flying foxes, goats, and a few rodents such as rats surviving the horrible conditions that exist here.

This Island also has some major natural attractions such as the crystal clear visibility, interesting basalt formations, Manta Rays, coral gardens that are fast growing, and the topography of past lava flows.

Aquatic Lives

With an abundant fish life and an outstanding coral growth, the Barren Island has Sea fans, Manta rays, Soft corals, and Reef fish.

It all starts off along a wall diving, having common stone structures which mark the landscapes underwater at Barren Island. Much around these rocks is a lot of coral growth and fish life. At the curve, we meet the reef, even having more coral growth.

The top of the reef which has a depth ranging from 8 metres to 15 metres showcases a carpet of very beautiful and fluorescent coloured corals, the great white gorgonian fans and of course the feather stars. The downward current has a tendency to get so strong very often than not, such that holding onto a rock is a necessity so as to avoid getting swept off by this current.

It is an often scenario that Manta sightings happen at this site, thus swooping in from the deep blue. A pertinent feature of this site is that of fans growing and spreading themselves out in a direction that is perpendicular to the current, and as a matter of fact, it maximizes the trapping of plankton which is a source of food and as well as sunlight which is an energy provider. You should also stay on guard for the topsy-turvy current.
